Kerry extends the hand of friendship to Jerry by offering to cook him a meal. It is a test to see whether or not he is husband material that she can set up house and home with. But the meal is basic one with no frills that he could cook himself. In his eyes she merely saves him the time of cooking something he would have cooked anyway.
Karen extends the hand of friendship to Jerry on a parallel mission by inviting him home for supper. She is also investigating husband material, but she offers more than pasta and salad; she offers him a life and the possibility of presenting his novel respectably to publishers for publication. The opportunity pays off, and Jerry ends up with the older woman who acts as mentor and father figure.
Rachel is the only one who excludes Jerry from table fellowship and looks at him as if to say: 'Now I've got you where I want you.' It is an attempt to socially and emotionally starve him from society in response to him showing no romantic interest in her.
